What to do in Gozo Diving

Diving in Gozo

Renowned for superb scuba and snorkel diving conditions, Gozo is a go-to destination for divers of all abilities and ambitions. Calm seas, excellent visibility, and warm temperatures year-round provide a platform for spectacular underwater scenery.

With 50 or more recognised dive sites around Gozo and tiny Comino alone, it’s no wonder the readers of Diver magazine voted Malta and Gozo the second best diving destination in the world in 2014.  Be it reefs, caves, or sea wrecks via shore or via boat, Gozo has a multitude of different diving discoveries for beginners and experienced divers alike.

Amongst the many superb diving sites the island has to offer, Dwejra is on Gozo’s west coast. Here you can access 3 standout diving attractions at once: the Blue Hole, the Coral Garden, and the Inland Sea.

The Blue Hole is remarkable amongst dive sites in Gozo for its approach along magnificent rock formations and beautiful living coral of yellow, orange, and pink. Here, as well as many other remarkable creatures, you can dive alongside seahorses and conga eels. Next you come to a spectacular underwater arch, from which you emerge into open sea and a sheer drop beneath you revealing shoals of sardines and other sea life aplenty. Accessed via an underwater chimney from here, you then come to the Coral Garden, resting in floodlit shallow waters with the chance to dive amongst parrotfish and octopuses. Onward, the Inland Sea is a landlocked lagoon from where you can dive out into the open sea via a massive underwater canyon.

Other notable dives around Gozo include the Cathedral Cave – a unique underwater dome, and Xatt I-Ahmar, where divers can explore the wreckages of 3 scuttled ships. These and many other diving attractions too numerous to mention, mean that Gozo is a really special place to dive. And because Gozo is so small an island, none of these diving sites are more than 20 minutes’ drive away.

To help you plan your Gozitan diving experience, Visit Gozo offers a choice of 9 fully accredited professional diving centres offering training and accompaniment for divers of all standards. Thereby, and given what’s been written, Gozo offers pretty much everything you need in a sea water diving destination.
