What to do and see in Gozo?
There’s lots to see and plenty to do in Gozo when you travel with SunChateaux. With your complimentary car and mountain bike hire, you can explore everything that this culturally rich island has to offer. And for the more adventurous guests, there are lots of exciting options such as boat, quad and Segway tours to fill the long hot summer days.
The island of Gozo is just a 25-minute ferry ride from the Malta mainland. Famed for its hospitality and its 300+ days of sunshine a year, this 26-square mile paradise is right in the heart of the Mediterranean. Slightly more rural than its sister island, Gozo boasts picturesque landscapes, scenic hills, pretty villages and a laid-back lifestyle. In recent years, Gozo has welcomed a number of world class restaurants, five star hotels and high street shops, making it a popular destination for many in the entertainment industry.
Traditions remain strong on the island, and there is a lively cultural calendar of “Festi” throughout the summer to celebrate each and every patron saint. Street bands, dancing, traditional food stalls and fireworks are on show, and the locals welcome everyone to join in the revelries.
As well as the cultural aspect of the island, there is a lot to see and do when visiting Gozo. It has some wonderful walking/hiking, horse riding and biking trails, and even rock climbing for the more daring. World heritage sites such as the megatlithic Ggantja Temples in Xaghra are well worth visiting, as are the museum and the Citadel, from which you will enjoy panoramic views of the island’s countryside.
Gozo is a popular scuba diving destination given its calm, warm waters and high visibility. Divers can experience underwater caves, wrecks, reefs and the spectacular “Blue Hole”. There are 3 professional dive schools in Gozo that provide shore or boat dives and PADI qualifications.
Despite its size, Gozo has a bustling nightlife and it is not all to be found in the capital, Victoria. The large outdoor nightclub in Xlendi has been described as “one of the most beautiful clubs in the world”, and there is a wide selection of bars with live music and entertainment.
Cycling on Gozo
Cycling on Gozo is a popular pastime for both locals and tourists alike. Whilst mountain biking is most popular in the milder months (i.e. May and October) it is a fantastic way (even in summer) to explore the Island’s stunning scenery and get about the majestic historical capital – Victoria.
On the Island, there is a scheme entitled SIBIT (Sustainable Interregional Bike Tourism) which is run in conjunction with Sicily to create a network of bicycle routes and ‘bike hotels’ across the two neighbouring islands. The SIBIT cycling route in Gozo spans the entire coastline and is perfect for exploring the delights and views that Gozo has to offer.
As part of your SunChateaux Gozo villa holiday, you will have access to complimentary mountain bikes, so cycling is a great way to explore the island. Or, for the more advanced bikers there are a number of off road tracks, downhill tracks and generally more daring routes. Whether you are a novice or a pro, your mountain bike will come in handy when on holiday in Gozo!
